The whys and hows of supporting local businesses this holiday season

Here at InDowncity, we believe in the importance of shopping small at local independent shops every single day. And once a year, Small Business Saturday comes around and serves as an especially integral day for the community to show support for small businesses and spend some money at the shops in their city, state, and beyond. Today, we’re here to share how to spend Small Business Saturday in Providence on November 29!

WHY TO SUPPORT LOCAL SHOPS THIS HOLIDAY SEASON (AND EVERYDAY):

  1. You’re Stimulating Your Local Economy. Did you know that $68 out of every $100 spent at local stores remains in the local economy? That’s amazing! Supporting our local businesses means fostering a healthy, thriving community, and making sure that it continues to be self-reliant and sustainable.

  2. You’re Giving Directly Back to the Community. Turns out that small, local businesses usually donate 250% more than their large business counterparts to both nonprofits and community causes. This generates “a positive cycle of giving back locally.”

  3. You’re Reducing Your Carbon Footprint. Good news for the earth- residents of communities with more independent businesses drive 25% less than those without access to local shops!

  4. You’re Helping Shape Your City. Small businesses create a unique sense of local identity and pride of place. If you love Providence’s wonderful stores, impressive food scene, exciting community events, and all the other things that make it a unique place to live and visit, then know that you’re individually contributing to the overall city culture by supporting local businesses.

  5. You’re Aiding Job Creation. Here’s a fact we love: small businesses contributed 55% of the total net job creation from 2013 to 2023. Support small businesses and, at the same time, support your neighbors!

So what exactly can you do in downtown Providence for this upcoming Small Business Saturday? You’re in luck- we hear there is a whole slew of special offers for Saturday, Nov. 29. Grab your coat, text the friend who is home for Thanksgiving, and head to beautiful, historic Westminster Street…
